Rob Key urges Joe Root to reconsider England captaincy after Ashes failure
Joe Root should consider giving the England captaincy up to let him regain his form after a disappointing Ashes, based on former Test batsman Rob Key.
Root was outside for a duck for the third time in as many matches until Australia retained the Ashes by accepting a 2-1 series lead with a victory in the first Test.
Despite having overseen England’s first failure to acquire a house Ashes series since 2001, Root said that he”certainly” remains the ideal man to lead the negative forward, starting with the fifth and final Test at the Oval on Thursday.
“At a certain stage, Joe Root has got to work out whether the captaincy affects his match,” Essential told Sky Sports News. “Forget the side along with everything else. ‘Could I be as successful and play as a batsman and a priest as I’ve been before?’
“I think his average before he was captain was 50 and it’s since fallen down to 40. That is what he has to reply, although that might be due to ailments – and only he can answer that.
“Whenever you ask any sportsperson that query about if they would like to continue, they’re always likely to say’yes’ straight away, otherwise it’s like giving up – and sportspeople don’t like giving up. But at some point, Joe Root is going to need to sit and really think about whether he wants to carry on and if he can be the batsman he wishes to be as a priest.”
Root has 30.87 runs throughout the show, a figure considerably below his career mark of 48.03, although the astonishing kind of Australia’s Steve Smith has emphasised the England captain’s struggles.
The weakness of England’s top-order batting compelled Root to promote himself a location out of his preferred No. 4 place at the beginning of the string, making him regularly exposed to some new ball in the hands of Australia’s exceptionally impressive fast bowling lineup.
Root England team-mate Jonathan Trott believes there are a shortage of viable alternatives to substitute the 28-year-old, and that accountability for the defeat has to have been shared.
“I want to see him remain in the function,” Trott told Sky Sports News. “I think there’s no better option in the England side to become captain. I believe he’s a natural choice.
“I believe he has looked really very great occasionally within this set. He has some fantastic deliveries and he will be hurting a bit with respect to not having the capability to do the task and find those Ashes back, however it is a team effort – it is not just to the captain when he goes on with this bat. It’s up to everyone.
“I presume he is the right man for the job. If he wants to continue to achieve this, I’d certainly back him.”
