Catalans Dragons chairman Bernard Guasch lays into Tony Gigot and other players
Catalans Dragons chairman Bernard Guasch has blamed the team’s meltdown to the players and stated he had been”affected” by the attitude of Tony Gigot.
In a meeting with Perpignan newspaper L’Independant, Guasch said he has been devastated by the team’s recent form, which comprised home beats by Hull KR and duo London Broncos.
The Dragons began the year on their 2018 Challenge Cup victory and have been sitting in third place however they will finish after winning only three of their past 11 matches.
Guasch explained the results demonstrated that the team’s reliance on Wigan duo Sam Tomkins and Michael McIlorum, who were suspended by a struggle with Warrington, and accused others of being a disruptive impact.
He also pointed the finger in”six or seven players in the end of the contract” and”seven or six problems with players who do not accept being told they won’t be with us next season”.
Among the departures is France international Tony Gigot, that refused the deal after Guasch lost his patience of a new deal, which is off the table.
“We gave him all of the cards this season. I’m very affected by his attitude,” Guasch stated. “Tony Gigot does not listen to the right individuals. At some point, you have to be serious and I’m.”
Guasch expressed his optimism from Steve McNamara, who joined the club on a bargain in June 2017.
Asked if the coach’s position was at risk, Guasch explained:”No. We’ll extend his contract at the forthcoming weeks of a couple of decades more.
“I cannot overstate what Steve McNamara brought to the team, saving us (from relegation) from the Million Pound Game at 2017, winning the Cup in 2018 and also this season we were third in June.
“I’m none of those people who say,’If we play a fantastic match, the players are very good and when we lose and we’re bad, the coach is’ awful’.
“We’ll learn from the great lessons to make 2020 a huge year.”
